Group Public Planetarium

The Acheson Planetarium, supported by the Michael and Adele Acheson family, at Cranbrook Institute of Science is an intimate theater that allows you to immersively explore and experience the universe in rich color and detail.

- General Group Admission Tickets are REQUIRED in addition to any Add-On experiences such as Acheson Planetarium.
- All groups must arrive at the museum at least 30 minutes prior to showtime.
- There is absolutely NO late seating for planetarium shows.
- Acheson Planetarium tickets are non-refundable.

Michigan Sky Tonight

What will I see when I go outside tonight? What’s happening at Saturn? What are the latest hot topics in Astronomy? Michigan Sky Tonight is a live-narrated program about what’s happening in the current night sky and in the universe of astronomy, from constellations to comets, planets to nebulae. In this 45-minute astronomical tour de force, you’ll also learn how to use a starchart that we provide for you to keep!

One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure begins on Sesame Street when Elmo’s friend, Hu Hu Zhu, visits from China. Big Bird, Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu take viewers on an exciting discovery of the Sun, Moon, and stars. They learn about the Big Dipper and the North Star and take an imaginary trip to the Moon where they learn that the Moon is a very different place from the Earth. When Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu imagine themselves back on Earth, they celebrate the idea that even though they live in two different countries, they still share the same sky.

Unseen Universe

For thousands of years we humans have observed the light coming from the night sky with our eyes. In the beginning of the 17th century, Galileo revolutionized our knowledge of the Universe with his telescope. Then, in the 20th century with the advent of rockets, it became possible to go above the earth’s atmosphere and observe X-ray and gamma ray radiation which are the marks of the hot and violent Universe. But it is not only light that can give us information about the cosmos. Neutrinos and cosmic rays also provide vital information. Finally, the detection by the LIGO experiment of gravitational waves from two merging black holes opened a new window in astrophysics. This program presents images of the cosmos as revealed by all these different messengers.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Join us at the Acheson Planetarium for an entertainment show like no other - The Dark Side of the Moon. The eighth album by the English rock band Pink Floyd. Originally released on 1 March 1973, on the label Harvest, it built on ideas explored in the band's earlier recordings and live shows, but departs from instrumental thematic by founding member Syd Barrett. The album explores themes including conflict, greed, the passage of time, and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett's deteriorating mental state. This program is usually available every Friday evening at 9pm. Please check out our daily planetarium schedule for specific show times and dates. This is not a laser show.
